According to Swedish legend, King Eric IX saw a golden cross in the sky as he landed in Finland during the First Swedish Crusade in 1157. He adopted the golden cross against a blue background as his banner. This story may have been invented in the 16th century as a copycat of the origin story of the Danish flag.
The blue and yellow Nordic cross flag was adopted as the national flag of Sweden in 1906.
