In 1603, James VI of Scotland inherited the English and Irish thrones creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain. In April of 1606 he introduced the King’s Colours as new flag representing the union of England and Scotland.

The flag would serve as the flag of the United Kingdom from 1606-1801. It was not adopted by Scottish military forces until 1707.

In 1801 the cross of St. Patrick was added to create the current Union flag.
