Lviv is the main city in Western Ukraine and the historical center of Red Ruthenia and Galicia. It was the capital of Galicia–Volhynia from 1199 to 1392. Later, it was the capital of the Ruthenian Voivodeship of the Kingdom of Poland from 1434 until 1772. Then it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It became the capital of the short lived West Ukrainian People’s Republic in 1918 before being invaded and annexed by Poland.

After WWI, it was the capital of the short lived West Ukrainian People’s Republic.
